From Waste to Worth: Vetrotex’s Circular Approach
At Vetrotex, sustainability is not just an ambition, it’s a strategy built into how we operate every day. As part of Saint-Gobain’s broader environmental commitments, we continue to seek innovative ways to reduce waste, reuse valuable resources, and support a more circular economy. One key area where this commitment is delivering results is in the valorization of production residues.
From waste to resource
There are two main pathways for valorizing these materials:
-
Reintegration into the furnace:
In 2024, around 6,000 tons of fibers were successfully valorized for furnace reinjection after going through a calcination line to remove sizing (1-2% organic) and it could be even higher with optimization of the calcination line. This process, operated at Litomyšl and Hodonice, allows recovered fibers to be melted and reused representing up to 10% of Vetrotex’s production residue reinjected into the furnace, avoiding them to become landfilled wastes.
-
Sales as by-products to Saint-Gobain ADFORS downstream textiles producers or to external partners:
Glass fibers that don’t meet internal quality standards are not systematically discarded. Instead, they are sold as secondary raw materials to customers with less stringent requirements, such as panel manufacturers or textile processors. Vetrotex sold as by-products over 7,500 tons of fibers production residues.
Competitive Advantages of Recycling Lines for Vetrotex
To enhance its competitiveness, Vetrotex has equipped specific sites with dedicated combustion and recycling lines that facilitate the processing and reuse of previously unusable materials. This strategic initiative allows Vetrotex to avoid the purchase of raw materials, thereby reducing production costs and minimizing environmental impact. By valorizing recovered materials, Vetrotex improves its operational efficiency while contributing to a circular economy.
Advantages for Downstream Producers, with HKO as an Example
For downstream producers, the by-products' sales approach also offers significant competitive advantages. Indeed, HKO, by adapting its production to the lower-quality fibers, but also more competitively priced ones, is able to reduce its production costs. Additionally, HKO even valorizes its own production waste, meaning HKO is avoiding landfilling to manufactured products which already contains fibers that have already been diverted from landfills. This practice not only strengthens their commitment to sustainability but also positions them as a responsible player in the market.
A circular vision for the future
The resale of production by-products is a perfect illustration of Vetrotex’s proactive approach to sustainability. By viewing waste as a potential resource, we are helping to close the loop on material use, reduce our environmental footprint, and support more circular manufacturing models.
Through investments in technology, partnerships with downstream users, and a deep-rooted commitment to responsible production, Vetrotex is turning challenges into opportunities and proving that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
